How to activate Windows Server 2025 Datacenter?
- Receive your server key + 100 User CAL keys by email from Licensier.
- Download the Windows Server 2025 ISO image from Microsoft.

How many virtual machines does Datacenter support?
An unlimited number! The Datacenter license does not limit Windows Server virtual machines — you can run as many as your hardware allows. This also applies to Windows containers and Hyper-V.
Does hotpatching also work on VMs?
Yes, hotpatching works both on the physical host and on virtual machines. You can update the host system and guest VMs without restart — zero downtime at every level.
How is it different from Standard 2025?
Datacenter offers: unlimited VMs (Standard: 2), Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica, Shielded VMs, Network Controller and Hyper-V containers. Both editions include hotpatching and SMB over QUIC.
Are 100 CALs enough?
100 User CALs cover access for 100 users. You can buy additional CALs separately or choose the 100 Users package, which is significantly cheaper per user for larger teams.
What is GPU Partitioning?
GPU Partitioning (GPU-P) allows a graphics card to be shared across multiple virtual machines. Each VM receives part of the GPU’s power — ideal for VDI, AI/ML applications and graphics-intensive environments.
Do I need Azure for hotpatching?
Yes, hotpatching requires the server to be registered in Azure Arc (free). Updates are managed through Azure Update Management. Azure Arc itself does not generate additional costs.
How long will Server 2025 be supported?
The expected support period is until around 2035 (5 years of mainstream support + 5 years of extended support). This gives it the longest support horizon among current server operating systems.
Is the license perpetual?
Yes, this is a one-time payment for the Datacenter license + 100 User CALs. No monthly subscription — the system and license remain valid indefinitely.
